Stacey (She Don’t Owe Us Shit)

A video demo of a new song, "Stacey (She Don't Owe Us Shit)." As you might can tell, I miss playing live, being a ham, and making my silly white boy guitar face. Voice & guitar "recorded live" to a backing track. I wrote this song in 2019 after reading an essay by the writer, Hannah Drake, titled, Black Women Do Not Owe This World Sh*t (https://writesomeshit.com/2019/08/30/...) In response to the recent post-election surge of new voter suppression laws, I decided to record a video demo this past weekend of the song - turn my anger and frustration into creating something. The media wants to spin these laws as "GOP is angry with Stacey Abrams," putting the responsibility back on Black women. Fuck that. Stacey Abrams has done enough, she doesn't owe us shit. In her book, Abrams says she writes country songs in her spare time. I want to live in a world where Stacey Abrams is the #1 country singer in the world and not having to sacrifice her artistic side for the safety of white dudes. Black women (all BIPOC women), are not our (cis white dudes) superheroes. They don't owe us shit.
